RP five yields Seaba crown
JAKARTA—Harbour Centre-RP Team absorbed a stinging 85-93 loss to Satria Mudra-Indonesia at the Britama Arena in this Indonesian capital to virtually bow out of the title race in the Southeast Asia Basketball Association Club Championship, no thanks to a bumbling sports official.
The tragic result came after Sam Ekwe, the team’s main man in both defense and rebounding, was prevented from playing in the tournament, after Basketball Association of the Philippines-Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas executive director Patrick Gregorio failed to convince Seaba president Dato Yeoh Choo Hock that the Nigerian has been cleared to see action despite lacking a clearance certificate.
Based on the Seaba guideline sent to Gregorio last March 21, foreign players have to secure a clearance certificate either from their respective national basketball associations or from the International Basketball Federation before joining any international tournament.
Gregorio claimed that he tried to secure the certificate as soon as he received the guideline, but the Nigerian basketball authorities allegedly didn’t respond to the letter.
Gregorio added that he sent a letter to Seaba regarding the case of Ekwe last March 26, saying that he is a student and not a full-time import.
But Seaba didn’t decide, prompting him to think that the 6’8” San Beda College center would be cleared to play based on what he calls as “the seven-day rule.”
“If they didn’t give any decision in seven days, that means everything is okay,” Gregorio said upon arriving in this bustling city armed with several pieces of documents. “I tried, but I really didn’t get it [clearance certificate]. So I wrote them [Seaba] a letter instead but they also didn’t respond. I honestly thought [that] he would be cleared.”
Gregorio added that he tried to personally explain the situation to Dato Yeoh in a desperate attempt of putting Ekwe back to the hardcourt. But Yeoh, who is also the secretary-general of Fiba Asia, was nowhere to be found, which Gregorio claimed was a deliberate attempt to put the Philippines at a disadvantage
