Satterwhite, Hurst Spark Comeback Win in Conference Opener

Hilo, HI—Gary Satterwhite and Brady Hurst sparked a ten-point second half run that propelled the Brigham Young University Hawaii men’s basketball team to a come-from-behind 76-72 win over UH-Hilo in the Pacific West Conference opener for both teams tonight.  With the victory the Seasiders improved to 2-5 for the season and 1-0 in the PacWest.

Hurst scored six points in the run and Satterwhite handed out two assists and score two points over a span of two minutes and 15 seconds that erased a 51-41 deficit to the game with 11:51 to play.  The teams were tied two more times, making 12 ties in the game, before a pair of Hurst free throws put BYU-Hawaii ahead to stay 59-57 with 6:55 remaining.  A Satterwhite three-pointer a little over a minute later gave the Seasiders a five-point cushion but the Vulcans rallied to cut the lead to 74-72 with just 22 seconds to play.  After the Seasiders missed the front end of a one-and-one free throw opportunity, UH-Hilo had a chance to tie or take the lead in the closing seconds but turned the ball over with eight seconds to play.  Junior Ale drained two free throws for the Seasiders with seven seconds on the clock for the final margin.

Ale and Bracken Funk led five Seasiders in double figures with 14 points apiece.  Jet Chang and Hurst each finished with 13 and Satterwhite came off the bench for a career-high 12 points on 4-5 shooting from the field including 2-2 from beyond the arc.  Ale dished out a game-high five assists and Hurst led the way on the boards with eight rebounds.  Funk finished with seven rebounds for the Seasiders.  Defensively, Ale came up with four steals and Hurst blocked two shots in the win.

UH-Hilo, now 4-2 for the season and 0-1 in the conference, was led by Zachary Wilde with 20 points and 16 rebounds.  Mack Terrell had 15 points and Mychael Hearns and Kiel Myers each had 12 for the Vulcans.

BYU-Hawaii will play Seattle Pacific on Saturday in Laie at 7:30 pm.  The game will be a rematch of a November matchup won by the Falcons in Seattle 76-65.
