Before the start of the season, Lawson was widely considered as the best point guard in his class, and a capable future NBA player.
I doubt that, however, after watching some full-game clips of UNC.
My first impression is that he is really undersized. Although listed at 6-0, i personally think he stands only 5-11, or even 5-10 atmost. Now, size may not be as much of a problem, as proven by CP3 (who is barely 6-feet with shoes), as long as you can shoot the ball, and be efficient on dribbling moves. Unfortunately, Lawson possess none of these qualities.
First he is a very streaky 3 pt shooter, even more streaker than Paul (when he's in wake),and he has almost no mid-range game to back it up. Worst of all, unlike most smaller guards, he does not possess a nifty floater that can help him score on taller defenders. His defiency in shooting the ball is exactly why he now struggles to score at will, like he used to do back in HS.
Second, he has the vision and instincts, but he has a tendency to be over confident in his ability to finish around stronger post players and overdribble. He has been jacking up quite a few turnovers with his habit to try to get past everyone FIRST, before passing the ball to open teamates.
Third, his ability to defend in college level remains in question. He has been stealing a lot of balls, but is struggling to stay in front of quicker guards like Mike Conley or bigger guards like Javaris Crittenton. Considering that he will be guarding even quicker and faster guy in NBA, he must learn how to play good, fundamental defense. (but i think roy williams can take care of that).
Fourth, playing in suck a deep , talented UNC team, how good can his individual stats be? While leadership is a qualitative measurement, NBA gms eventualy need some subtantial figures to make a decision.
He still has a long way to go before he can live up to the hype of the Raymon Felton-comparison so many others have casted on him. One or two championships before declaring for draft will help his draft stock in the future. In the mean time, he is not even qualified to be on the draft list.

LANDMARK GAME FOR LAWSON:
1.) January 27, 2007 UNC 92: Arizona 64

In this blowout game, it seems like Lawson had a phenomenal performance, stat-wise, in his match up against Mustafa Shakur, who is an above-average defender with above-average athleticism. I have not had a chance to watch the actual game, so I will save my comment until I got the game tape from Pontel. Bu it should very interesting to see how Lawson got these numbers. |
