The Rockets host one of the NBA’s most talked about teams, the Philadelphia 76ers, on Thursday.
Philadelphia is on a 25-game losing streak, one defeat shy of tying the NBA record set by Cleveland during the 2010-11 season.
But NBA commissioner Adam Silver doesn’t believe the 76ers are tanking the season in order to claim the best lottery odds for the first pick in June’s NBA draft.
“The issue has to be that the poorest-performing teams have to be there because of a lack of talent on the floor, not because the players and coaches are involved in some sort of strategy,” Silver said. “I define tanking when coaches and players intentionally try to lose games, and I don’t think for a second that is happening in this league.
“My sense is that the players and the coaches … their jobs depend on winning, and they want to go out and win every night. On the other hand, it’s for the league to set appropriate incentives for ownership to put the best possible team on the floor.
“You don’t like to see any team have to go through a losing streak like they are and flirt with the longest losing streak in the history of the NBA. … What I’m watching in Philly goes under the category of rebuilding.”
One of the 76ers’ 15 wins this season was over the Rockets in November.
