Kukoc retirement talk on hold
Before I even had a chance to ask the question, Herb Rudoy wanted to set the record straight.
"Toni is not retired," Rudoy, the Chicago-based agent for Toni Kukoc, told me over the phone. "This is an on-going process. Don't write his obituary yet."
A few days ago, it seemed Kukoc did that himself. While at a golf outing in the Milwaukee area, Kukoc said he planned to retire – even though he said last season that he wanted to play at least one more season.
But Kukoc has a home Highland Park, a northern suburb of Chicago, and wants to play for a team that is relatively close. Thus, Kukoc was hoping to play to either play a fifth season for the Bucks, or finish his NBA career where he started it – with the Bulls in Chicago.
But the Bucks are no longer an option for the 38-year-old Kukoc. They made a series of off-season moves and now have a glut of forwards. The Bulls could still be an option for him, though.
The Bulls have yet to finalize their training camp roster and still are exploring some options, one of them being free-agent forward Maciej Lampe who, despite being only 21, has three years of NBA experience under his belt.
Rudoy made it clear Kukoc only wants to play for the Bulls - even though several other teams have expressed an interest in him, including Seattle, Toronto and San Antonio.
"We're going to wait and see what happens," Rudoy said "A lot of things can happen between now and training camp."
Training camp roster almost complete
In less than three weeks, the Bucks will commence with training camp. With 15 players having guaranteed contracts, their roster seemingly is set. Yet, the Bucks are expected to bring in at least two more players.
One of them will be Chris McCray, a 6-foot-4 combo guard from Maryland. McCray was overlooked in the June draft, but the Bucks liked what they saw of him with the Terrapins and during a pre-draft workout at the Cousins Center.
Because of academic issues, McCray played in only 16 games last season. He averaged 15.2 points while shooting a lofty .516 from the field and .355 from 3-point range.
Nice schedule
The Bucks have traditionally drawn well on weekend games, and this season's schedule is laced with Friday, Saturday and Sunday games.
In fact, the Bucks will play 15 of their 41 home games on Saturdays. They'll play another four games on Sundays.
Harris weighs decision
Bucks general manager Larry Harris said he still hasn't made a determination on whether he'll return to the "Pro Hoops Show" on WSSP (1250 AM) this season.
Based on the numerous e-mails I've received last season, it was amply apparent Bucks fans appreciated Harris' refreshing candor, insightfulness and wit. What I personally appreciated was Harris' willingness to answer each and every question which, by the way, weren't screened by the show's producer. Harris had some hard-ball questions thrown his way and, unlike most pro management types, didn't dodge them or simply give pat responses.
Getting antsy
While training camp is almost three weeks away, several Bucks have been showing up at the Cousins Center, including guards Mo Williams and Charlie Bell and center Dan Gadzuric.
Ersan Ilyasova, the team's second-round pick last year, is also expected in town shortly. The 6-foot-9 Ilyasova played for Turkey in the recent World Championships in Japan and injured his calf muscle. But the Bucks expect Ilyasova to be fully healthy by the start of camp.
The Bucks are high on the 19-year-old Ilyasova. So apparently are the Toronto Raptors. According to two league officials, the Raptors wanted Ilyasova to be part of the trade that sent T.J. Ford to Toronto for Charlie Villanueva.
